Near
the corner of the shop at no.12, and therefore at the crossroads formed by the
intersection of the Via dell’Abbondanza with the roadway between Insulae IV and
VI of Reg. I, and Insulae I and VII of Reg. IX (so-called Vicolo di Tesmo),
there is the usual masonry altar (height 1.06m) which would have been brought
to light at the beginning of the new excavations on the Via dell’Abbondanza.
Only
a few insignificant traces remain of the sacred figuration painted on the
plaster above the altar’s floor.
See Notizie degli Scavi, 1929, (p. 428-9).
(Ara Compitale –
XI (cd.

In this room, the low zoccolo/plinth was yellow and sprinkled with red.
Above the zoccolo, in the middle zone of the south wall are the remains of two large red painted panels, with a narrow yellow panel between them.
Hanging in the red panels were painted garlands, shields, discs and lances; the vignette in the centre of the east panel depicted a dove, and the vignette in the centre of the other red panel showed a couple of doves on a branch.
In the yellow panel was a painted figure.
According to de Vos in PPM, the male figure dressed in a green tunic and red cloak, painted on a yellow background, held a decoy bird in his raised right hand and a long twig (una paniuzza) in his left hand, and was standing on a cage that served for transport and base for the decoy.
The upper zone of the wall was painted white and divided into panels by red vertical borders.
